Prof. Gregorio Iglesias is Head of the Department of Energy Engineering and Professor of Marine Renewable Energy at University College Cork, and Honorary Professor of Coastal Engineering at the University of Plymouth (U.K.) He has over 25 years of experience in ocean energy, offshore wind energy and coastal engineering. Prof. Iglesias was awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie individual fellowship to investigate the effects of wave farms on coastal processes (WaveImpact) and served as an expert witness on behalf of Spain’s State Ports for the new, €500M breakwater at the Port of Gijón. He patented a wave energy converter (WaveCat), a hybrid wave-wind system and an Artificial Vision system for laboratory use. Prof. Iglesias coordinated numerous laboratory tests (coastal structures, wave energy converters) and contributed to the IEC standards for wave energy device development (scale-model testing) and the Spanish Standards for Maritime Works (ROM). He pioneered the application of Artificial Intelligence to coastal engineering. Prof. Iglesias regularly acts as a reviewer for international journals, and as an expert evaluator for several research councils and the European Commission. He is a member of various Editorial Boards and the Subject Editor of Energy (Elsevier) for wind energy, wave, tidal and hydropower. He has published over 300 journal papers and attracted over €70M of research funding. With 12101 citations and an h-index of 62, Prof. Iglesias is within the top 10 cited Engineering and Technology Scientists in Ireland and the most cited researcher in Offshore Renewable Energy (Google Scholar).
